Bradley International Airport Earns Industry Recognition

Bradley International Airport (BDL) has been honored with a major industry award by Airport Businss Magazine for its Inline Baggage Screening Facility, a project that has reshaped both airport operations and the passenger experience.

Completed in early 2026, the $250 million project at BDL represents one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades in the airport’s history, officials point out. Developed in partnership with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the facility replaced lobby-based baggage screening with a fully integrated Checked Baggage Inspection System.

Relocating TSA checked bag screening operations out of the ticketing lobby has significantly reduced congestion, improved passenger flow, and freed up valuable terminal space. The new system also streamlines baggage handling behind the scenes, improving efficiency for both TSA and airline partners.

In addition to security and operational upgrades, the project includes a new concourse with three new gates, expanded seating, upcoming dining and retail options, and improved passenger amenities. These additions support long-term airline growth while elevating the overall travel experience.

The award-winning BDL is operated by the Connecticut Airport Authority, and its operations are entirely self-funded. The airport contributes nearly $3.6 billion to the regional economy, according to officials.

A year ago, concession upgrades at Bradley International Airport were jointly named “Airport Business Project of the Year” by Airport Business Magazine in the publication’s 2025 Retail and Concessions category. BDL was recognized for the introduction of two prominent storefronts located in the terminal – Charter Oak Emporium and CT River Landing. The storefronts, created in partnership with concessionaire partner Paradies Lagardère, anchor each side of the main terminal and showcase local history.

Last month, BDL officials announced that in partnership with the airport’s food and beverage operator SSP America, Urban Lodge Brewing Co., a craft brewery and taproom with locations in Hartford and Manchester, has opened a new location at BDL. The restaurant serves its signature beer and a family-friendly food menu and is located post-TSA screening within the airport’s airside lobby.

In addition, aerlier this month Bradley International Airport was named the recipient of the 2026 Spotlight Award by the Greater Springfield Convention and Visitors Bureau.
