Connecticut Mattress Recycling Program Sets New Record, Continues to Grow
/The Mattress Recycling Council’s (MRC) Bye Bye Mattress program kicked off its second decade in Connecticut setting a new performance milestone. MRC’s recently filed 2025–2026 Annual Report to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection highlighted that 219,675 mattresses and foundations were collected for recycling during the reporting year, nearly 7,000 more than the previous year, and the most ever in the program’s lifetime.
Through these efforts, 4,227 tons of foam, fiber, steel, and wood were diverted from the waste stream and recovered for recycling, according to officials..
Launched in 2015, Connecticut became the first state in the nation to implement the bedding industry’s innovative statewide mattress recycling solution. Over the past 11 years, MRC’s Connecticut program has collected more than 2.1 million mattresses and foundations and recycled 74 million pounds of valuable materials.
These materials are repurposed, officials point out, supporting jobs and transforming what would otherwise be waste into useful products such as carpet padding, insulation, and steel. The program also helps municipalities save millions of dollars in avoided disposal costs.
MRC’s Bye Bye Mattress program continues to thrive across Connecticut, with 157 municipalities participating in the effort. In these communities, residents can drop off unwanted mattresses at no cost at their local transfer station or recycling center. Others may have access through their solid waste provider that picks up bulky items at the curb. The program also receives mattresses from 438 public and private entities.
“Year after year, Connecticut continues to show the impact that a strong statewide recycling network can have,” said Dan McGowan, MRC’s Northeast Program Manager. “Every mattress collected represents valuable materials that can be recovered and put to new uses instead of being landfilled or incinerated. We’re proud of the program’s continued impact and grateful to the communities and partners across Connecticut who help make mattress recycling accessible to residents throughout the state.”
The Mattress Recycling Council (MRC) is a nonprofit organization that operates recycling programs in states that have passed mattress recycling laws: California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Oregon.
