Connecticut's Best Employers Includes State-based and Out-of-State Companies, Organizations

Connecticut’s Best Employers, a new data analysis has found, include companies in a range of varying industries, companies headquartered in the state and elsewhere, and even some from the education and government sectors.

The newly published rankings, compiled by Statista and published by Forbes magazine, has pharmaceutical giant Pfizer at the top of the list, followed by The Hartford, Marriott International, Yale University and Lockheed Martin.  Rounding out Connecticut’s top 10 employers are Boehringer Ingleheim, headquartered in Ridgefield, Prudential Financial, headquartered in New Jersey, the Fairfield Public Schools, University of Connecticut and Yale New Haven Health.

To determine the state-by-state rankings list, Statista surveyed 70,000 Americans working for businesses with at least 500 employees. All the surveys were anonymous, allowing participants to openly share their opinions.

The respondents were asked to rate their employers on a variety of criteria, including safety of work environment, competitiveness of compensation, opportunities for advancement and openness to telecommuting. Statista then asked respondents how likely they’d be to recommend their employer to others, and to nominate organizations in industries outside their own.

The number of businesses ranked in each state was dependent on two factors—the number of qualifying employers and the size of the state’s workforce—and those with operations in more than one state had the opportunity to be listed multiple times.

The final list ranks the 1,382 employers that received the greatest number of recommendations in each of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia.

In Connecticut, a total of 40 organizations were ranked in the Statista analysis for Forbes.  Just outside the top 10 at number 11 was Hartford Healthcare, followed by IBM, Raytheon Technologies, Stamford-based World Wrestling Entertainment, Montville’s Mohegan Sun, Hilton, Lowe’s, General Dynamics, Cigna and the City of Stamford.

Somewhat unexpected employees earning recognition were the United States Postal Service at #21, the U.S. Department of Defense at #23, the State of Connecticut at #24, and United Parcel Service (UPS) at #38.

Eversource Energy and Avangrid were side-by-side in the rankings, at #36 and #37, and two banking institutions, Bank of American and Webster Bank, earned a slot, at #32 and #34 respectively.

A regional supermarket chain, Big Y World Class Markets, made the list at #40, as did retailers Lowe’s (#17), Home Depot (#22), Kohl’s (#25), Target (#28), and Macy’s (#39).

Other Connecticut-based employers to rank in the state’s top 40 best employers include Henkel (#27, Rocky Hill), Blue Buffalo (#31, Wilton), and Daymon (#35, Stamford).
