Danbury, Bridgeport Ranked In Top 15 Most Diverse Cities in US

America is undergoing an extreme makeover, thanks to rapid demographic diversification. For example, the percentage of people in the U.S. who are multiracial increased from 2.9% in 2010 to 10.2% in 2020, according to data compiled by the website WalletHub.

Not only have waves of immigration changed the face of the nation, the website points out, they’ve also brought in fresh perspectives, skills and technologies to help the U.S. develop a strong adaptability to change.  And among the nation’s most diverse cities, squeezing into the top 10 at #10 is Danbury.  Just outside the top 10 is Bridgeport at #12.  Stamford ranks at #19 and Norwalk at #30.

To identify the most diverse cities in the U.S., WalletHub compared 501 of the largest cities across 13 metrics in five major diversity categories – socioeconomic diversity, cultural diversity, economic diversity, household diversity, and religious diversity.  Danbury’s highest rankings were in the cultural diversity category, at #21, and socioeconomic diversity, at #34 in the U.S.

“The most diverse cities demonstrate diversity in many dimensions – not just in race and gender but also everything from residents’ languages and birthplaces to their job types and household sizes,” explains WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe.  “These cities blend together a multitude of different perspectives, helping people to better understand the world around them and become more empathetic. This exchange of ideas also tends to increase the economic success of diverse cities.”

Danbury ranked #4 among small cities, with Norwalk at #9, New Britain at #14 and Bristol at #48; Bridgeport and Stamford were #2 and #3 among mid-sized cities, with Waterbury ranked #30, Hartford at #39 and New Haven at #42 in that category.

Nationwide, the most diverse cities were Gaithersburg, MD; Silver Spring, MD; Germantown, MD;  Houston, TX; Arlington, TX; New York, NY; Jersey City, NJ; Dallas, TX; Charlotte, NC and Danbury, CT.
