Olivia, Liam Lead the Way: Most Popular Newborn Names in CT 2019

America’s No. 1 name for girls born in 2019 ― Olivia ― also dominated on the state level according to data compiled by the Social Security Administration (SSA), taking the top spot in 25 states, including Connecticut. Emma (No. 2) was the favorite in nine states, and Ava (No. 3) and Charlotte (No. 6) were each the top pick for six states.

There were similar trends for boys, as the No. 1 name, Liam, was the most popular choice in 26 states including Connecticut. Oliver (No. 3) was the top pick in the second-highest number of states with nine, followed by Noah (No. 2) with seven. The fourth most-popular name in the U.S. ― William ― was the frequent top choice in the South, in Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.

In 2019 in Connecticut, the top five boys names were Liam, Noah, Mason, Lucas and James.  The most popular girls names were Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Mia and Sophia.  Olivia was the most popular girls name in Connecticut for the fourth consecutive year, following Sophia in 2015; among boys names, Noah was most popular for the four previous years.  Olivia and Mason was the most often used names for newborns in Connecticut in 2014.

Also of note on the list: Henry, which ranks at No. 12 nationally, was the top name for boys in Minnesota last year, and Harper, the No. 1 name for girls in Vermont, was No. 9 across the U.S.

Nationally throughout the past decade, the most popular boys names were Noah, Liam, Jacob, William, Mason, Ethan, Michael and Alexander.  The most popular girls names during the 2010s were Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Mia, Abigail and Emily. There were 20,062,312 male births and 19,157,040 female births, according to the SSA.
