National Security Agency Recognizes CCSU’s Cyber Defense Curriculum Track
/Cybersecurity studies at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) recently received the ultimate endorsement.
The National Security Agency (NSA) notified CCSU in mid-June that the Cyber Defense track within the Cybersecurity program is now a validated Program of Study through 2028. CCSU’s Cyber Defense concentration is the only the second in Connecticut to receive NSA recognition.
Renae Weathers, director of the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity, wrote in CCSU’s validation letter, “Your ability to meet the increasing demands of the program validation will serve the nation well in contributing to the protection of the national information infrastructure.”
Cybersecurity is a Bachelor of Science program offered by the Department of Computer Science at CCSU. To receive program validation from the NSA, academic institutions must demonstrate that it engages in significant community involvement, academic activities, and institutional practices in cybersecurity.
“The NSA’s recognition is a testament to the unwavering commitment and expertise of our faculty and staff,” notes Dr. Chad Williams, chair of the Department of Computer Science. “This validation reinforces the reputation and quality of our program, providing assurance to our students and the community that they are receiving an exceptional education in cybersecurity.”
The BS program in cybersecurity, according to the CCSU website, provides a strong foundation in both networking and computer science and is based on faculty, facilities, and research resources in both the Department of Computer Electronics and Graphics Technology and the Department of Computer Science, as well as, support by the Department of Political Science and the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice.
NSA recognition also makes the university eligible to receive the prestigious designation of becoming a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity. Williams says the department will begin that process on July 15, with the final submission for review on Oct. 15.
“Cyber threats continue to increase, and companies are deepening their reliance on technology at the same time. Cybersecurity professionals are needed to counter these threats and protect sensitive data,” says CCSU’s Chief Information Officer George Claffey.
“CCSU is excited to provide foundational and advanced cybersecurity training to traditional students, as well as incumbent learners. Our program graduates are workforce-ready and can assist organizations across all industries, as leaders are going through a digital transformation and securing their technology.”
