University of Hartford Connects Students with Connecticut Science Center

Community partnerships are a key component of the University of Hartford’s approach to the higher education provided to students. By teaming with local businesses and organizations, UHart gives students the opportunity for real-world experience that can help them succeed in a future career or explore different paths.

A burgeoning partnership with the Connecticut Science Center (CSC) is among the latest examples. During the fall semester, the CSC was a client of UHart’s student-run marketing agency, Crested Communications, led by Sarah Miner, Clinical/Applied Teaching Associate Professor of Communication. Students worked closely with the Science Center to come up with creative ways to promote the organization and some of its programs.

Crested Communications functions as an experiential learning opportunity whereby students work with real world clients on various public relations campaigns. From social media strategy to videography to event coordination, this course allows students to shine within their own creative fields while working with a client.

UHart faculty, staff, and students have also been participating in the Science Center’s monthly “Pathways to STEM” nights, which draw students from elementary through high school looking to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

UHart’s rocketry club was represented in October. In November, students and faculty from the respiratory care and prosthetics and orthotics programs participated. November’s program featured UHart’s Formula Society of Automotive Engineers showing off their custom-built race car.

The Connecticut Science Center partnership is one of several that have grown during the past year, giving students new opportunities. Another example: UHart students have participated in Masonicare’s residency program.

Community partners provide students with internships, collaborative projects, classroom guest speakers, and more. During Career Exploration Day in October, more than 300 UHart students got to visit nearly 20 University partners, from the Connecticut Airport Authority to the Hartford Yard Goats.

With the spring semester now underway, officials indicate that there’s more to come.
