Connecticut Ranked as 4th Best State for Working From Home

Two years of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unprecedented numbers of people working from home, and even as pandemic-induced restrictions continue to lift, the work-at-home trend is far from vanishing.  As with the pandemic response itself, there are sizable differences among the states in the climate for remote working.

Connecticut is among the best, according to a newly released analysis of the work-at-home status across the country, ranking at number four.  The top ten are: New Jersey, District of Columbia, Delaware, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Utah, Texas, Washington, Maryland, and New York.

WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 12 key metrics. The data set ranges from the share of workers working from home to internet cost and cybersecurity. The financial services website also considered factors like how large and how crowded homes are in each state. Together, the metrics provided the WalletHub ranking of how feasible working from home is in terms of cost, comfort and safety.

Among the individual categories, Connecticut ranked:

  • 2nd – Households' Internet Access

  • 13th – Average Home Square Footage

  • 20th – Share of Population Working from Home

  • 24th – Share of Potential Telecommuters

  • 30th – Internet Cost

“It makes sense that the majority of people who can work from home would like to continue doing so after the pandemic for many reasons, such as the fact that it eliminates a daily commute and can offer a quieter workspace,” said Jill Gonzalez, WalletHub analyst. “But working from home could also create increased job competition. People can be hired by companies across the world, but also have to stand out among a worldwide field of applicants.”

She added that ““Letting employees work from home could lead to a general boost in worker morale, too, considering the majority of people who currently work from home want to continue doing so.”
